Job summary

The Ali Forney Center, based in Manhattan, is seeking a Controller to oversee daily accounting operations and safeguard financial records. You will supervise the Bookkeeper, coordinate with an outsourced finance firm, and manage budgets, cash flow, and program-funded accounting across multiple funding sources.

Ideal candidates will have 5+ years in nonprofit accounting, strong GAAP knowledge, and a proven ability to strengthen internal controls and financial reporting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field preferred.
• Five or more years of progressive accounting experience, including supervisory or staff-review responsibility.
• Experience with general ledger accounting, accounts payable/receivable, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
• Experience with nonprofit accounting, including fund accounting, grant accounting, and/or restricted funding.
• Experience supporting month-end and year-end close processes and external audits.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office applications.

Responsibilities

• Oversee day-to-day accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll allocations.
• Maintain chart of accounts and ensure consistent coding across programs, departments, locations, and funding sources.
• Liaise with outsourced finance firm on month-end close, financial reporting, and deliverables.
• Review and approve Bookkeeper’s work: invoices, vendor onboarding, expense coding, reconciliations.
• Monitor integrity and completeness of accounting records and ensure timely recording of transactions.
• Review and approve vendor bills and payment requests per policy and approvals.
• Oversee corporate card activity reconciliation through BILL Spend & Expense.
• Ensure segregation of duties in financial processes.
• Oversee cash flow forecasting and monitor liquidity for operations.
• Review budget-to-actual performance; explain variances to department directors.
