Job summary

Regional Transportation District (RTD) is in Denver seeking an Instructional Designer to design and deliver immersive, technology-based training for rail operations and maintenance. You will work closely with SMEs to develop scripts, scenarios, and assessments that simulate real-world conditions, including VR and AV components.

The role requires coordinating with operations and safety teams to ensure accuracy, regulatory compliance, and effective knowledge transfer through engaging learning

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Transportation, Organizational Development, Education, Instructional Design, Workforce Development, or related field.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in training, instructional design, curriculum development, or simulation-based learning.
  • Experience with simulation or scenario-based training development and evaluating learner performance.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and implement immersive, technology-based learning experiences for commuter and light rail operations and maintenance training programs, including simulator, VR, AV, classroom, hands-on, eLearning, and blended delivery methods.
  • Collaborate with SMEs to identify learning objectives, performance expectations, skills, and knowledge required for employees to safely and effectively deliver rail service according to standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct needs assessments and gap analyses to identify deficiencies within existing simulation and training programs, recommending learning experiences to close gaps.
  • Develop and manage full simulation courses and curriculum for rail operations and maintenance programs, including scenarios, materials, resources, activities, assignments, and assessments.
  • Create, test, and refine multimedia and simulation content, including video, audio, VR scenarios, interactive exercises, and gamification; write scripts for knowledge transfer.
  • Structure instructional content to support adult learning principles and operational competency; continuously refine materials for evolving requirements.
  • Facilitate simulation-based training sessions with pre-briefings and structured debriefings to assess performance and identify improvements.
  • Collaborate with operational leaders, instructors, SMEs, and external stakeholders to ensure content accuracy and alignment with policies and fleet operations.
  • Develop and implement assessment tools such as rubrics, checklists, and pre/post-tests to measure learner competency.
  • Maintain documentation of design, scenarios, materials, and revisions for accuracy and compliance.
  • Perform routine troubleshooting and maintenance on simulation equipment to ensure reliability.
  • Evaluate training effectiveness and implement improvements based on feedback and metrics.
  • Provide guidance to instructors on simulation technologies and course delivery to ensure high-quality learning experiences.
