Job summary

The Illinois Association of School Administrators is seeking an Elementary Special Education Teacher to serve students in grades K–8. Duties

The Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality, individualized instruction and support to students with disabilities in grades K–8. This role includes developing and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), collaborating with general education staff, communicating with families, and ensuring compliance with all federal and state special education regulations. The teacher supports students academically, socially, emotionally, and behaviorally to promote student growth and success within the least restrictive environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in compliance with IDEA and state regulations

Provide direct instruction to students using evidence-based instructional strategies

Adapt curriculum, materials, and instructional methods to meet individual student needs

Collaborate with general education teachers to support inclusion and accommodations

Collect and maintain accurate data on student progress and performance

Participate in IEP meetings, eligibility meetings, and problem-solving team meetings

Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and concerns

Implement behavior intervention plans and provide social-emotional supports as needed

Consult with related service providers (speech, OT, PT, social work, school psych, etc.)

Maintain accurate student records and required documentation

Ensure compliance with all special education timelines and legal requirements

Supervise paraprofessionals, when assigned

Participate in professional development and staff meetings

Promote a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment

Perform other duties as assigned by administration

Qualifications

Qualifications

Valid state certification/licensure in Special Education

Knowledge of IDEA, IEP development, and special education compliance

Experience working with students with diverse learning, emotional, and behavioral needs preferred

Strong collaboration, communication, and organizational skills

Ability to differentiate instruction and manage diverse classrooms

Proficiency with educational technology and data systems
