Job summary

UNC Health is seeking a Clinical Pharmacist for the Surgical Trauma Critical Care Unit (STCCU) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, NC. The role provides pharmacotherapy services, drug information, and daily medication management for critically ill adults within a 40-bed unit.

The position offers a standard 40-hour work week (Mon-Fri days with weekend rotation) and opportunities to precept students and collaborate with ICU teams. Licensure in NC required or eligible with 6 months to obtain it.

Qualifications

  • Active pharmacist licensure with the NC Board of Pharmacy or obtainable before initiation of employment.
  • Recent graduates may fill this role while pending initial licensure, but must obtain licensure within 6 months of orientation or sooner if required for operations.

Responsibilities

  • Receives prescriptions, interprets prescriptions, and reviews the patient's medication profile/history. Clarifies incomplete, inaccurate, or contraindicated prescriptions with the prescriber, nurse, or other health professional, as appropriate.
  • Utilizes and analyzes patient data to provide optimal drug therapy recommendations and clinical interventions with the provider.
  • Compounds and oversees preparation and dispensing of medications including sterile products.
  • Complies with the medication formulary and substitution programs to optimize therapy and minimize cost.
  • Completes required documentation in the medical record and other regulatory paperwork.
  • Counsels patients and family members regarding pharmaceutical care issues.
  • Directs workflow of the shift and supervises pharmacy technicians, students, and/or volunteers.
  • Adheres to federal, state, local and institutional policies and regulations.
  • Identifies and participates in process improvement opportunities.
  • Precepts students and residents and participates in training new staff.
