Job summary

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough is seeking a dedicated individual to assist in the operations of the ice arena. This position contributes to daily facility management, ice maintenance, and customer service, working within Borough policies and core values.

Responsibilities include opening/closing, cash handling, skate sharpening, and coordinating public programs; a 6-month temporary assignment with no benefits; prior ice arena or Zamboni experience preferred; a valid Alaska driver's license

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in the occupational field.
• Valid Alaska driver’s license; must be 19+ with one year driving experience.
• Background check, drug screen, and physical required.

Responsibilities

• Assists the Ice Arena Manager with day-to-day operations.
• Opens and closes the facility and secures it at day end.
• Reconciles cash receipts and handles registrations.
• Promotes programs and services to the public.
• Assists with scheduling and registering for adult hockey leagues.
• Repairs and maintains mechanical equipment and ice surface.
• Cleans restrooms, locker rooms and maintains arena grounds.
• Sharpens skate blades and participates in snow removal operations.

Please Note: This position is a 6 Month Temporary Assignment from Date of Hire.

Pay Grade

J1 - J5 - DOE

Minimum Requirements

High School diploma or equivalent.

Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in the occupational field, sufficient to understand the major duties of the position, and to be able to answer questions and resolve problems. Related experience includes: Ice arena experience, Zamboni/Olympia operating experience, facility maintenance, janitorial experience, skate sharpening, cash handling and customer service.

Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Alaska for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Must be at least 19 years of age with one (1) year of driving experience.

Must successfully pass a pre-employment background check, drug screen, and physical.

Duties/Responsibilities

• Assists the Ice Arena Manager with the day-to-day operations of the arena.
• Opens and closes facility as assigned; secures facility at end of day.
• Reconciles cash register receipts.
• Promotes programs and services to the general public.
• Promotes, plans, and assists the public in the areas of scheduling and registering for adult hockey leagues.
• Repairs and maintains mechanical equipment.
• Maintains and repairs ice surface.
• Repairs and maintains facility.
• Cleans restrooms and locker rooms.
• Sharpens skate blades.
• Participates in snow removal operations.
• Maintains arena grounds.
• Performs related duties.

Temporary and Thousand Hour (1000) employees for the Mat-Su Borough do not receive a benefits package.

Alaska Supplemental Benefits System

The Supplemental Benefits System (SBS) is in lieu of Social Security and is mandatory. An employee contributes at 6.13% of gross wages, matched by the Borough (6.13%), on the present wage base of $176,100.
