Job summary

FirstLight in New Milford, CT, is hiring an experienced Station Control Room Operator Helper to support safe, efficient operation of hydroelectric assets. You will perform rounds, assist with pumps and turbines, and participate in a structured training progression to qualify as Station Operator.

The role requires a 24‑hour operation schedule, weekend/holiday coverage, and strong teamwork. A valid driver’s license and safety culture are essential for success in this unionized position.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• 3+ years of experience in a plant operations role or related industry.
• Demonstrated mechanical and electrical aptitude.
• Knowledge of safety and environmental regulations.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Takes initiative to progress/improve functions and equipment.
• Proficient computer skills.
• Strong problem‑solving, organizational and planning skills.
• Self‑starter with high level of initiative and independence; also excels in a team environment.
• Must have a valid, clean driver’s license.
• Must be able to work a schedule based on 24‑hour operations and work 12‑hour shifts including weekends, holidays and evenings and be available to respond to plant emergencies as required.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Station Operator in operating pumps, valves, hydroelectric turbines, cooling water systems, lubricating oil systems, air compressors, and braking systems.
• Ensure proper operation of complex systems that can affect safety and plant operations.
• Perform plant rounds; report equipment problems and log data.
• Investigate equipment problems and take corrective actions.
• Operate auxiliary equipment, turbines, pumps, and valves; clean water and oil strainers.
• Perform preventive maintenance tasks and painting as directed.
• Maintain neat, clean plant surroundings and outdoor areas.
• Work a 12‑hour rotating shift schedule including holidays, weekends, and nights.
• Ove rt ime as needed for field support and major events.
• Complete Hydro Operator Training progression to become Station Operator; participate in trainings.
• Develop ability to operate plant equipment from the DCS and remotely from other hydro plants.
• Follow operating procedures and instructions; be a reliable team member.
• Comply with FirstLight policies; perform other duties as assigned.
