Job summary

M&T Bank seeks a senior mainframe engineer to own design, development, modernization, and production support for critical IBM z/OS applications. You will combine COBOL batch and online expertise with modern Git-based engineering, test automation, and CI/CD.

You will lead technical design decisions, ensure SDLC adherence, and collaborate with stakeholders to meet enterprise standards. Hybrid in-office with some remote flexibility is offered.

Qualifications

• Extensive COBOL, JCL, CICS, VSAM experience on IBM z/OS.
• Experience with z/OS debugging, performance analysis, and abend troubleshooting.
• Git-based CI/CD and code reviews experience for enterprise apps.
• Knowledge of mainframe security, access control, auditing, change management.
• Ability to integrate mainframe apps via MQ, APIs, files, or events.

Responsibilities

• Lead design, development, modernization, and support of mainframe applications.
• Define test strategy covering batch validation, automated regression, and performance checks.
• Build and maintain Git-based CI/CD workflows with automated quality gates.
• Ensure production readiness for batch schedules, online transactions, restart/recovery, monitoring, and support docs.
• Communicate architecture decisions and risks to technical and business stakeholders.
