Job summary

University of Michigan Health-West is seeking a Hospital Services Coder with at least one year of ambulatory surgery/OBV coding experience. Under the direction of the Coding Supervisor and Manager, you will translate physician and nursing documentation into ICD-10-CM and CPT codes for outpatient services.

You will review clinical documentation, ensure 95% coding accuracy, initiate coding queries when needed, and enter hospital charges within required timeframes.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED.
• RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, COC or other professional HIM coding certificate.
• Active AHIMA/AAPC membership in good standing.
• Minimum one year of recent facility coding experience.
• Experience with coding software and basic computer software including Microsoft Office; familiarity with encoder tools.
• Typing 40 WPM or better.

Responsibilities

• Code hospital-based diagnoses, treatments, and procedures using ICD-10-CM and CPT coding systems.
• Maintain 95% coding accuracy and productivity within established standards.
• Ensure supporting documentation is available; initiate coding queries as needed.
• Enter and validate hospital department charges within required timeframes.
• Maintain continuing education credits for compliance and credential requirements.
• Protect patient privacy and confidentiality in all aspects of work.
• Participate in departmental quality standards and team initiatives.
• Perform other duties as assigned by management.
