Job summary

Merchants Insurance Group, headquartered in Buffalo, NY, seeks a Litigation Claims Adjuster to join our Claims Legal Team. The role focuses on auto and general liability claims, including NY Labor Law, construction defect, premises and/or third-party property damage claims, with hybrid work flexibility.

You will work with policyholders, attorneys, agents and vendors to manage complex litigated claims, evaluate coverage, conduct investigations, and negotiate settlements while maintaining

Qualifications

• 4-year degree or equivalent work-related experience.
• 5+ years' experience handling commercial lines claims; NY Labor Law, construction defect or third-party property damage experience is a plus.
• JD and insurance defense experience encouraged.
• Ability to oversee and manage defense counsel, select and retain experts, and develop resolution strategies.
• Professional designations or working towards industry designations are a plus.
• Exceptional organization, negotiation, verbal and written communication skills are required.

Responsibilities

• Cultivating relationships with claims staff, policyholders, attorneys, agents and service providers toward optimal outcomes.
• Providing high level customer service while managing a portfolio of complex litigated claims.
• Evaluating coverage by interpreting policy language and preparing coverage position letters.
• Conducting and directing timely and quality claim investigation, evaluation and equitable settlement.
• Ensuring timely and accurate reserves in line with reserving practices.
• Negotiating fair settlements directly with attorneys.
• Identifying risk transfer opportunities through contracts and applicable law.
