What You Will Do

Southern Cross is hiring NOW for a full-time position that involves surveying natural gas pipelines and traveling to various locations around the country to operate our Advanced Mobile Leak Detection (AMLD) vehicle. This dual role as a gas leak survey technician and driver requires flexibility to work days and nights as needed, depending on the assigned role.

Driving assignments will vary from 3 days to 6 months, primarily during the night. You will receive per diem for meals and approved expenses, along with paid travel and hotel accommodations. The Field Service Technician may fly or drive to AMLD assignments based on distance from home. Some familiarity with technology and a willingness to learn in a technical environment are essential. Typically, you can expect to drive about 8 hours per night during 3rd shift (sundown to early AM).

Additionally, technicians will be cross-trained in traditional gas leak survey skills. These assignments will vary in duration and are mainly conducted during daytime hours.

Training lasts approximately 4-5 weeks (paid), during which you'll learn to detect and classify natural gas leaks accurately, walk 5 or more miles daily, and work outdoors in all weather conditions—including urban, rural, and environmentally challenging areas such as tall grass, uneven terrain, fields, city sidewalks, alleyways, and sometimes encountering dogs and wildlife.

Responsibilities & Duties

• Be flexible to travel up to 75% of the time, including occasional weekends.
• Be able to fly or drive anywhere in the U.S.
• Have mechanical aptitude and troubleshoot technology as needed.
• Drive in all weather conditions.
• Follow all safety and quality policies and procedures.
• Learn training material via classroom or online courses and pass all qualification tests.
• Comfortably drive survey vehicle at 15 mph for 4 hours straight, with breaks.

Physical and Additional Requirements

• Ability to sit and drive 8 hours daily.
• Bend, crouch, kneel, and walk several miles per day.
• Carry at least 20 lbs. of equipment.
• Communicate effectively with customers, providing excellent customer service.
• Follow all company and client procedures.
• Possess excellent customer service and communication skills.
• Be available for overtime, including weekends.
• Be comfortable using computers and technology.

What You Will Earn

• Starting pay is $18.25/hour, with increases of $0.50 at 60 and 180 days.
• Night shift pay increases by $1.00.
• A daily $40.00 per diem for meals and approved expenses when traveling, plus paid travel and hotel accommodations.
• Additional $2.00/hour travel stipend for hotel stays.
