Job summary

Southern Company is seeking a Civil/Structural Engineer based in Birmingham, AL to deliver structural design for the power delivery system, including substations and transmission lines. The role involves preparing drawings, specs and material requirements with emphasis on safety, quality, scheduling and cost control.

The position requires a mix of field and office work with a hybrid arrangement, one remote day per week, and occasional travel to field sites or client locations.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited BS in Civil or Structural Engineering.
• Minimum 5 years of civil/structural design experience.
• Experience producing contract documents for structural steel and concrete foundations.
• Experience with substations and transmission lines is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Produce and check structural design calculations and drawings.
• Multi-task and prioritize multiple project assignments to meet tight dates.
• Communicate effectively with supervisor and project team.
• Develop scope and man-hour estimates for projects.
• Coordinate design activities with other disciplines.
• Provide schedule and staffing input for projects.
• Prepare cost estimates and material takeoffs.
• Support Construction through all project phases.
• Travel to sites; up to 25% per year.
• Serve on damage assessment team after major storms with overnight travel.
