Job summary

Universal Resources, Inc. in Birmingham, AL, is seeking a Transmission Civil Design Engineer to design and analyze substation structures using CAD tools, with emphasis on reinforced concrete and structural steel design.

You will collaborate with engineers and multiple departments, review standards, coordinate with vendors, and support construction services, field services, and project management through pre-, during, and post-construction phases. Some overnight travel may be required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in civil engineering is required.
• EIT Certification or PE license preferred.
• 5+ years of experience in structural steel and concrete design.

Responsibilities

Job description

Prepare high quality calculation and design packages needed to construct substation and transmission line facilities using CAD-based tools, based on design standards. The Engineer in the Transmission Civil Design organization will be responsible for designing and analyzing new or modified existing substation structures. The Engineer will be expected to perform reinforced concrete design and structural steel analysis/design on an as needed basis. The Engineer will work with other engineers to help in their development and knowledge transfer. Coordinate and communicate with other departments associated with Civil Design. Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and Southern Company committee members to resolve standards and material issues. Provide support to Constructions Services, Substation Construction, Transmission Line Construction, Field Services, Project Management and Substation Maintenance. Perform site visits for projects, including pre-construction meetings, during construction and post-construction. Some overnight travel may be required. Participate in design review meetings. Provide work direction and oversight for designers and drafters.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering is required. Engineer-In-Training (EIT) Certification or Professional Engineering License preferred.

Experience

5 plus years of experience in structural steel and concrete design required. Experience in industrial and/or commercial structural engineering required. Experience with seismic, wind and vibration analysis is preferred. Prior foundation design experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Working knowledge of AISC, ASCE, ACI codes. Working knowledge of AWS welding standards. Working knowledge of OSHA codes as it relates to steel design. Understanding of ANSYS, MathCAD and STAAD Pro. Understanding of deep foundation design utilizing AllPile, LPILE, FAD Tools. Experience with analyzing steel connections. Experience in reinforced concrete design.
