Job summary

Actalent is seeking a Test Engineer for our Frederick, MD location to support the Performance Test Lab. You will plan, coordinate, and execute certification and performance testing, design test apparatus, and ensure compliance with ASHRAE, AHRI, and ISO standards.

Collaboration with sales, engineering, and field teams is essential to deliver high-quality results. The role requires a BS in Mechanical Engineering, extensive HVAC testing experience, and strong documentation skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field.
• 25 years of experience in an engineering or technical role.
• Experience performing HVAC testing or HVAC service with hands-on familiarity with HVAC equipment.
• Strong knowledge of HVAC systems and their components, including operation in a test environment.
• Ability to apply basic algebra and perform calculations for test design and data analysis.
• Ability to read and write in English to create clear test documentation, reports, and communications.
• Experience with test equipment and test procedures, including setup, operation, and data collection in lab/manufacturing environments.
• Demonstrated test engineering experience, including designing or executing test plans and interpreting results.
• Understanding of manufacturing processes related to HVAC or mechanical systems.
• Ability to validate test results and confirm compliance with standards and requirements.
• Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills for root-cause determination and solutions during testing.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Performance Test Lab Supervisor in planning, coordinating, and scheduling activities for performance and certification testing.
• Support Sales and Application Engineering by reviewing testing specifications and scripts and providing technical input.
• Create detailed documentation for test planning, including scripts, drawings, instrumentation, and material lists.
• Determine root causes of issues identified during testing and propose potential solutions.
• Establish internal test standards aligned with ASHRAE and AHRI guidelines.
• Generate clear and accurate test reports and communicate results to other departments.
• Design test control apparatus and develop methods when test requirements deviate from standards.
• Coordinate on-site third-party NRTL testing and ensure readiness, with minimal travel.
• Ensure testing activities meet ISO standards and safety procedures.
• Provide manufacturing support in the test lab and manufacturing areas.
• Offer field support for equipment testing in environments typical of HVAC installations.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve test methods and lab processes.
• Perform other related duties to support lab and engineering objectives.
