Job summary

Job Description

This is a 10 month teaching position with all associated benefits. Individual will be expected to obtain half of the required teaching certification coursework within two years of hire.

Summary

An employee in this class will teach students at the Somerset County Career and Technology Center. Employee works under the direct supervision of the Administrator in Charge of the Career Center. Employee will teach students all aspects of the Heating, Air Conditioning, Electrical and Plumbing trades, and general Refrigeration principles.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: Other duties may be assigned by the Administrator in Charge or a designee.

  • Plan as sequential course of study for the students to follow.
  • Make lesson plans for the materials to be covered each day.
  • Keep the front office informed as to the attendance of students in the class and enter attendance via database.
  • Order materials necessary to teach the HVAC program.
  • Give instruction and demonstration to class throughout the class period.
  • Enter grades and homework assignments via the database as required.
  • Keep the front office informed of illness in a timely manner so a substitute can be arranged.
  • Overall goal is to prepare students enrolled in the class for entry level positions involving Heating, Air Conditioning, Electrical and Plumbing upon completion of a two year planned course of study.
Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

Must have a minimum of five years successful experience in the field with a high school diploma. Minimum of three years successful experience in the field with an associate’s degree in the trade or a bachelor’s degree. Minimum of two years successful experience in the field with a bachelor’s degree in a state approved vocational program.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Valid State of Maryland driver’s license with a good driving record. A Commercial Driver’s License is preferred. Must obtain a Maryland Standard Professional Certificate of Teaching no later than four years after hire. A minimum of six hours of coursework per year is required will seeking certification.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional and trade journals, technical procedures, blueprints and building plans. Ability to write reports and procedure manuals as directed. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of vendors, administrators and the general public.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have basic knowledge of Internet software including automatic temperature control systems; Project Management software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software. Pursues training and development opportunities to expand job knowledge.

Other Skills and Abilities

Must have thorough knowledge of HVAC, Electrical and Plumbing tools and their uses. Must have thorough knowledge of refrigeration gases and their characteristics. Knowledgeable of all safety procedures related to equipment and operation is required. Knowledge of the set up and operation of soldering and brazing equipment is also required. Must be able to determine measurement using precision instruments. A thorough understanding of repair and maintenance procedures for HVAC equipment is expected.

Other Qualifications

Must have good attendance and assures work is covered while absent. Must be able to work with people in large and small groups.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud while working around machinery and moving parts.
