$85,000 - $107,000, plus 12% paid retirement benefits after eligibility

ASSOCIATION INFORMATION:

The YMCA of Greater Long Beach is a $45M organization with 1,100 employees, 350 are full-time. The HR team is led by the VP of Human Resources and including the VP of HR has five staff. Human Resources Manager (this position), HR Generalist, HR Coordinator, and HR Assistant.

The association has 8 operating units, three traditional YMCA branches offering membership throughout the service area. The Lakewood Family YMCA in Lakewood, CA is the largest facility and went through a complete $5.8M renovation. The other two membership branches in Long Beach are the Fairfield Family YMCA in North Long Beach, and the Los Altos Family YMCA in East Long Beach where they are currently starting a capital campaign to build a new 45,000 sq. ft. facility. In Big Bear, CA the association has a full-service resident camp. In the Bellflower community, the Los Cerritos YMCA offers day camp, aquatics, sports, and afterschool programming. The Early Childhood Education program, funded by the State of California, operates six preschools throughout the Greater Long Beach area. In Downtown Long Beach, the Community Development branch operates the Youth Institute, Change Agent Productions, and the Cambodia Project. Additionally, the association runs twenty-nine afterschool programs spread out across the thirteen cities service area and has support staff in 80 transitional kindergarten Long Beach classrooms.

GENERAL OVERVIEW:

As a member of the Human Resources team, the Human Resources Manager supports the VP of Human Resources in strategic HR leadership YMCA as an "employer of choice." The role focuses on attracting, developing, and retaining the best talent available while overseeing the development and implementation of talent management, compensation, employee benefits, and human resources policies. Other responsibilities are ensuring legal compliance, employee relations, worker’s compensation, and safety.

PREFERRED CRITERIA FOR CANDIDATES:

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources management, business administration or related field required.
  • Seven years of demonstrated progressive experience in human resources, with at minimum five human resources generalist competencies.
  • Four years of demonstrated experience participating in varied elements of employee relations.
  • Strong knowledge of California HR laws, regulations, and best practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal skills, and ability to prepare and present training to groups of varied sizes and roles.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365, Adobe Pro, payroll, HRIS, and other systems.
  • PHR (Professional in Human Resources) certificate preferred.
  • Three to five years leadership experience is preferred.
  • Non-profit experience preferred.
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.

KEY FOCUS AREAS:

  • Lead the HR department's day-to-day functions, demonstrating a strong understanding of HR programs, including benefits, compensation management, workers' compensation, and legal frameworks.
  • Support the VP of HR in managing compensation to ensure the organization remains fair and competitive in all compensation matters.
  • Oversee the execution of HR deliverables and activities, including employee relations, talent acquisition and staffing, HRIS, performance management and improvement tracking, onboarding, staff recognition/appreciation, employment practices and procedures, benefits administration, recordkeeping, safety, training logistics, report preparation, and ensuring the efficient daily operation of the HR department.
  • Assist with the development and administration of programs, procedures, and guidelines to align the workforce with the Association's strategic goals.
  • Contribute to the development of department goals, objectives, and systems.
  • Administer and explain policies, procedures, expectations, and benefits to employees at all levels.
  • Foster positive relationships to bridge organizational policies and procedures with staff needs through effective employee and manager interactions.
  • Support the talent management process, ensuring recruitment, training, and performance management efforts align with the Y’s mission, strategy, and operational goals, while integrating leadership competencies into HR processes.
  • Design, train, and facilitate training and development programs, including all legally required training for staff.
  • Navigate employee relations, balancing employee needs with organizational goals to find effective solutions.

KEY DELIVERABLES FOR POSITION:

  • Support the Human Resources department in all aspects of human resources including recruitment, selection, onboarding, compensation, benefits, leaves of absence and separations.
  • Ensure compliance with legal requirements, benefit regulations and fair application of policy in the association.
  • Champion employee engagement efforts through methods such as action items from the staff survey.
  • Fully integrate the complete suite of features available in the HRIS system and work to achieve user adoption at the branches.
