  • Coordinate onboarding and new hire orientation, ensure policy compliance.
  • Support employee relations, investigations, and performance processes in coordination with HR leadership.

Job description

The Human Resources Generalist plays a key role in supporting the daily HR and payroll functions of our law firm. This position works closely with the Director of Human Resources and firm leadership to support multiple office locations through payroll administration, benefits coordination, employee relations, recruiting, onboarding, training, performance management, and compliance with applicable employment laws and firm policies.

The ideal candidate is organized, professional, and service-oriented, with the ability to manage sensitive information, support a fast-paced legal environment, and contribute to a growing firm committed to making the legal system more approachable and accessible to everyone.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain accurate employee records and update HR databases for new hires, separations, status changes, leave tracking, and related personnel actions.
  • Review, prepare, and input payroll data, including garnishments, benefit deductions, 401(k) deductions, and paid time off, and prepare semi-monthly payroll for processing.
  • Audit electronic timekeeping records for completeness and accuracy and follow up with managers regarding missing or incorrect entries.
  • Support benefits administration by assisting with enrollments, changes, employee questions, and coordination of related documentation.
  • Partner with managers to identify staffing needs and support recruiting efforts, including job postings, resume review, interview coordination, candidate communication, and hiring logistics.
  • Conduct background checks, employment eligibility verification, and onboarding coordination for new hires.
  • Provide new employee orientations and ensure onboarding materials, firm policies, and required documentation are completed accurately and professionally.
  • Assist with employee relations matters, including investigations, disciplinary meetings, performance concerns, and terminations, in coordination with HR leadership and management.
  • Support the performance evaluation process and recommend updates to improve consistency, accountability, and employee development.
  • Coordinate employee training programs related to onboarding, professional development, compliance, and location-specific needs.
  • Review and respond to unemployment claims and other employment-related notices with appropriate documentation.
  • Assist with HR projects, meetings, reports, presentations, and internal communications as needed.
  • Maintain awareness of changes in employment law, HR best practices, and HR technology and help ensure firm policies remain current and compliant.
  • Ability to travel infrequently to local offices.
  • In-office position in one of the major Gravis offices including Boise ID, Richland WA, Austin TX, or Tacoma Washington.
Qualifications
  • Proven experience as an HR Generalist and Payroll Administrator, preferably in a law firm or professional services environment. Law firm postings often prefer direct experience supporting attorneys and staff in a multi-office setting.
  • Experience with HRIS platforms such as Paylocity preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Working knowledge of payroll, benefits administration, employee relations, recruiting, onboarding, and employment law compliance.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with the ability to interact professionally with employees at all levels of the firm.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling sensitive personnel matters.
  • Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and a genuine desire to contribute to a growing legal practice.
Education
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration, or a related field preferred.
  • SHRM certification or HR-related certifications beneficial.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
