Base pay range

$95,000.00/yr - $120,000.00/yr

Role Summary

The Director of Human Resources, reporting to the CEO, will play a critical role in driving a comprehensive and equity-centered HR strategy that supports our mission and our staff, while also maintaining best practices in human resources and compliance with all local, state, and federal laws. The Director of HR will lead all aspects of human resources, including recruitment and retention, performance management, HR operations, employee relations, and culture-building. This is an exciting opportunity for a values-driven HR leader to contribute to the success of NYC Outward Bound Schools by aligning people strategies with organizational goals and centering equity in all aspects of staff experience.

  • Lead the design and execution of a comprehensive HR strategy that supports staff engagement, development, rewards, recognition, and retention
  • Partner with leadership to shape an inclusive, mission-aligned culture rooted in NYCOBS core values
  • Champion DEI initiatives in collaboration with the Chief of Staff, staff-led working groups and organizational leadership

Talent Acquisition & Onboarding

  • Oversee inclusive, equitable recruitment processes to cultivate a diverse, high-quality pipeline of candidates for all staff positions, including crafting targeted outreach strategies to attract qualified candidates who resonate with the organization's culture and values.
  • Partner with hiring managers to ensure implementation of a consistent, high-quality hiring practices and strong candidate experience
  • Lead onboarding efforts to ensure new employees are welcomed, supported, and connected to mission and culture

HR Operations & Compliance

  • Oversee HR operations, including benefits administration, compensation, personnel records, and compliance with labor laws and internal policies
  • Serve as primary contact for HR systems, vendor relationships, and policy implementation
  • Ensure employee handbook and HR policies are up-to-date and reflect organizational values and DEI best practices
  • Ensure equitable and impartial application of compensation, policies, and processes

Performance Management & Development

  • Manage and refine employee performance management systems that support clarity, feedback, and professional growth
  • Develop learning and development opportunities aligned to staff needs and organizational goals

Employee Relations & Support

  • Serve as a trusted advisor and resource for staff and managers on personnel matters, conflict resolution, and workplace issues
  • Create and maintain systems that promote staff voice, feedback, and well-being
  • Lead and respond to HR investigations or concerns in a manner that is consistent, fair, and transparent

General Expectations for all Leaders

  • Manages a small HR team to ensure the delivery of high-quality services and support to all employees
  • Monitors organizational culture and employee morale to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Cultivates an engaging and inclusive environment that attracts and retains a diverse pool of qualified talent.
  • Fosters a culture of cross-departmental collaboration, individual initiative, accountability, and responsibility across the organization.
  • Provides guidance and support to the organization's leaders and employees
  • Develops presentations and memorandum, as needed
  • Maintains compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and best practices
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant HR experience, ideally with some experience in non-profit organizations
  • Knowledge of HR best practices and labor and employment policy
  • Knowledge of NY state employment law preferred by not required
  • Strong commitment to educational equity for BIPOC youth, diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Demonstrated dedication to our core values of community, courage, equity, integrity, and learning throughout all aspects of their work
  • Strong organizational, project management, and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build trust, work collegially, and achieve influence across a wide range of diverse stakeholders
  • Ability to generate innovative ideas, originate action without instruction, take initiative, and prioritize tasks effectively
  • Skilled in working independently and following through on assignments with minimal direction
  • Ability to remain detail-oriented while also maintaining focus on the big picture
  • Demonstrated flexibility, maturity, and ability to juggle competing priorities
  • Demonstrated effective judgment and discretion in handling sensitive matters
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal; experience and skill in public speaking and presentations
  • Unquestionable integrity and ethical standards in leadership
  • Excellent digital literacy skills, including but not limited to Microsoft Office and Google
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced nonprofit setting.

  • Hybrid position; Requires multiple days per week on site in Long Island City as outlined in the organization’s remote work policy
