The Cato Corporation is seeking an experienced HR Business Partner to join our HR team!

The Cato Corporation, a leading specialty retailer of value-priced women’s fashion apparel with corporate offices located in Charlotte, North Carolina, operates three concepts: Cato, It’s Fashion and Versona. The company has approximately 1,300 stores throughout the United States and a diverse workforce of over 6,000 associates. The Company’s stock is traded on the NYSE under the symbol “CATO”.

CATO is seeking a HR Business Partner who will report to the Director of Human Resources. The HRBP will thrive on building relationships and executing HR solutions that align with business goals and deliver sustainable results. You will support managers for performance management and talent development and execute initiatives that elevate employee retention and engagement. The HRBP is an integral player in navigating organizational change, ensuring compliance, and enhancing the associate experience. Daily activities will include support for staffing, training, associate relations, team building, talent development, succession planning, leave management and strategizing with associate engagement. You will maintain an effective level of business acumen and have the opportunity to grow in role and career with CATO!

Responsibilities include:

  • Business Acumen: Build strong relationships with leaders, understand business goals, and implement HR strategies to drive productivity, compliance, and continuous improvement. Support business changes such as reorganizations, safety incidents, and leadership transitions.
  • Business Operations: Lead the development, understanding and execution of HR policies that comply with legislation such as EEO, FMLA, DOL, OSHA, and FLSA. Stays current with employment laws and regulations.
  • Associate Effectiveness: Support managers on performance management, talent development, conflict resolution, and associate learning opportunities. Support performance review process to ensure consistency, fairness and career development..
  • Associate Relations: Guides associates on workplace issues and concerns, and ensures compliance with company policies and regulations. Gathers information related to legal processes and employment disputes to support and conclude investigations and ensure EEOC compliance.
  • Leave Administration: Consult and support leave programs such as PTO, FMLA, ADA, short-term and long-term disability, and other company-specific leave policies. Build and utilize strong partnerships with Benefits, Payroll, Risk Management and HRIS to support leaders and associates as internal customers
  • People Analytics: Understand root causes of turnover, absenteeism, and performance to execute action plans that drive engagement and retention. Creates opportunities for career development and associate engagement.
  • Benefits & Compensation: Gather information for wage recommendations, conduct benefits education, and support the open enrollment process.
  • Talent Acquisition: Partner with leaders and Recruiting Specialist to attract, develop, and retain top talent for CATO. Support hiring processes, participate in interviews, and local networking opportunities.
  • Talent Development: Supports the annual performance review process by relaying and reiterating timeline and processes for locations and leaders. Assists leaders with goal alignment and related communications.

Requirements for this position include:

  • A minimum of 5-8 years Human Resources experience as an HR Generalist for a multi-site company.
  • Retail experience is a plus.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources or related field.
  • Excellent verbal, written communications skills.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent time management skills with proven ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a diverse associate population.
