Are you organized, tech-savvy, and energized by work that makes a difference? The County of San Luis Obispo Public Works Department is looking for a Human Resources Assistant (DPT) to join our dynamic Human Resources team within Public Works.
In this role, you’ll be at the center of the employee experience—helping recruit and onboard new team members, supporting employees throughout their careers, and keeping important HR processes running smoothly. You’ll manage a diverse range of responsibilities, including recruitments and new hire onboarding, performance evaluation tracking, weekly payroll processing, employee benefits and payroll support, workers’ compensation, leaves of absence, and other essential HR and administrative functions.
This is a fast-paced role where no two days are exactly alike. You’ll interact with employees, supervisors, job candidates, and HR partners, providing responsive and knowledgeable customer service while handling confidential information with care and discretion.
The successful candidate will be a trusted resource who can explain processes clearly, provide guidance with confidence, stay organized amid competing priorities, and build positive relationships across the department. If you enjoy being the person others can count on to keep things moving, we’d love to hear from you.
We’re looking for someone who brings energy, curiosity, accountability, and a strong commitment to customer service. Someone comfortable handling sensitive information and challenging situations with tact, diplomacy, and professionalism, who understands the importance of confidentiality when working in Human Resources.
The ideal candidate should be highly organized and detail-oriented, but can also adapt quickly when priorities shift. Can manage multiple deadlines, respond to interruptions, and keep projects moving in a fast-paced environment without losing sight of the details. Someone who is excited to learn new systems, programs, and processes and has no problem with adapting to new technology. Curiosity and initiative to quickly understand how things work and the follow-through to become a reliable resource for others is necessary. Most importantly, someone who enjoys working with people. Someone approachable, responsive, and confident communicating with employees, supervisors, applicants, and colleagues at all levels. Who knows how to build trust, collaborate effectively, and provide excellent service, even when the answer isn’t always simple.
