The County of San Luis Obispo Department of Public Health is seeking a full-time Multilingual Outreach Coordinator (County Classification: Program Coordinator) to connect Public Health programs and services with communities throughout San Luis Obispo County. This position develops and implements culturally and linguistically responsive outreach strategies that improve access to services, strengthen community partnerships, and ensure community perspectives inform Public Health programs and outreach.
As a liaison between Public Health, community members, community-based organizations, and partner agencies, the Coordinator focuses on communities that have been historically underserved and face barriers to services. The role builds trusted relationships, leads multilingual outreach efforts, supports health education and promotion, and strengthens connections to essential resources.
The Multilingual Outreach Coordinator advances the department’s equity, language access, and community engagement priorities by ensuring community perspectives meaningfully inform program planning, outreach approaches, and service delivery.
TYPICAL TASKS AND REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
Multilingual Outreach and Community Engagement
- Develops, coordinates, and implements culturally and linguistically appropriate outreach strategies to increase awareness of Public Health programs and services.
- Conducts outreach in settings such as community events, schools, faith-based organizations, agricultural communities, and community centers.
- Builds and maintains trusted relationships with community members and partner organizations.
- Represents the department at community meetings, workshops, resource fairs, and other engagement activities.
- Identifies barriers to accessing services and recommends strategies to improve engagement.
Language Access and Culturally Responsive Services
- Promotes clear, culturally responsive public health messaging by collaborating with program staff to ensure information is accurate, accessible, and aligned with department guidance.
- Develops multilingual outreach materials in collaboration with program staff and translation resources.
Community Partnerships and Collaboration
- Coordinates the Farmworker Outreach Taskforce by establishing and maintaining relationships with community-based organizations, healthcare providers, schools, local agencies, and other stakeholders.
- Serves as a liaison between Public Health programs and community partners to strengthen communication and referral pathways.
- Assists with planning and facilitating community meetings, listening sessions, workshops, and outreach events.
Outreach Planning and Evaluation
- Assists in the development of outreach plans and engagement strategies.
- Coordinates logistics for outreach events, including materials, interpretation, and partner participation.
- Documents outreach activities and partner interactions. Maintains accurate records and enters data into applicable Public Health tracking systems.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with promotores, community health workers, or community-based organizations.
- Experience providing outreach in Spanish, Mixteco, or other languages spoken locally.
- Experience coordinating community events, workshops, or listening sessions.
- Experience developing culturally or linguistically appropriate materials.
- Experience working with historically underserved populations, such as agricultural, Indigenous, rural communities, and people with disabilities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A combination of education, training, and experience resulting in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of qualifying education and experience includes:
A: Possession of an associate’s degree from an accredited college or university. In addition, one year of experience assisting in financial, budgetary, coordination, communication, service delivery, or program operations;
or
B: One year of experience performing work equivalent to a Supervising Administrative Assistant;
or
C: Three years of experience performing clerical work equivalent to an Administrative Assistant III.
LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY:
- Spanish and English bilingual proficiency required.
- Mixteco proficiency highly desirable.
Language proficiency assessments and applicable bilingual compensation will follow County Human Resources policies.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver’s license.
- Ability to travel throughout San Luis Obispo County.
- Ability to work occasional evenings, weekends, or nontraditional hours.
- Ability to complete required background checks.
