Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Health, Safety, and Environment Officer for a major Oil & Gas contractor near Upington, Northern Cape, South Africa. The role blends on-site safety oversight with remote reporting under a hybrid schedule.

You will develop and monitor HSE policies, conduct site inspections, perform risk assessments, investigate incidents, and deliver training. Requires a degree in OH&S or Environmental Science, 3+ years in HSE, NEBOSH/SAMTRAC desirable, and willingness to travel/relocate.

Qualifications

• Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field.
• Minimum 3 years of experience in an HSE role, preferably in Oil & Gas or large-scale construction.
• Knowledge of relevant HSE legislation, standards, and best practices (e.g., OHS Act, environmental laws).
• Experience in risk assessments, HAZOP studies, and incident investigations.
• Strong understanding of safety management systems.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and in a team; willingness to travel and hybrid work schedule.
• Proximity to Upington or willingness to relocate; NEBOSH or SAMTRAC certifications desirable.

Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and monitor HSE policies and procedures across project sites.
• Conduct regular site inspections and audits to identify hazards and ensure compliance.
• Perform risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies.
• Investigate all safety incidents, near misses, and spills; determine root causes and actions.
• Deliver HSE training and toolbox talks to site personnel.
• Maintain accurate HSE records including incident reports and training documentation.
• Ensure compliance with local and international HSE regulations and client requirements.
• Liaise with regulatory bodies and client representatives on HSE matters.
• Promote a positive safety culture and employee participation in HSE initiatives.
• Coordinate emergency response procedures and drills.
