Job description

Our client is a high-end residential construction company in New York City with approximately 45 employees across its office and project sites. This is the company’s in-house human resources position, reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer.

The HR Generalist exists to help the company make better hires, keep good people, and stay compliant with federal, New York State and New York City employment and labor laws, including workplace-safety recordkeeping and training requirements under OSHA. Working closely with the COO and other senior managers, you will learn how each function operates and use independent judgment to plan and carry out HR work across recruiting and hiring, onboarding and retention, employee relations, records, and policy.

The company uses a professional employer organization for payroll, benefits administration and related compliance. You are the day-to-day HR lead and the point of contact with them. Job-site safety stays with field leadership; you coordinate with them on safety records and training.

What the role covers
  • Workforce planning and recruiting. Define each role with the hiring manager before the search begins, write and post openings with the good-faith pay range required by New York State and New York City law, and track every open position from approval to start date.
  • Interviewing, selection and offers. Build structured, job-related interviews with an evaluation rubric and a scoring system, and prepare managers to interview and score consistently and lawfully.
  • Onboarding, retention and employee relations.
  • Records, policy and compliance, including OSHA recordkeeping and required training.
  • Culture, events and professional development.
What we are looking for
  • 5+ years of HR experience covering the functions of an HR Generalist.
  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of federal, New York State and New York City employment law.
  • Clear, accurate written and spoken English.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
Preferred
  • SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR or SPHR certification.
  • Experience in New York City construction, ideally high-end residential.
  • Experience as the only HR professional at a small or midsize company.
  • Experience working with a professional employer organization.
  • Conversational Spanish.
Schedule and compensation
  • Full-time and exempt. Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., in the New York City office, with occasional visits to active job sites.
  • $86,000 to $92,000 base salary per year.
  • Paid time off and paid holidays, health insurance and retirement plans, pre-tax commuter benefits, and all leave and insurance required by law.
Compensation

$86,000-$92,000 per year
