Job summary

Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians is seeking an entry-level Utility Worker in Suttons Bay/ Peshawbestown, MI. The role supports the Maintenance Department with grounds care, housekeeping, and basic building upkeep across housing units and facilities.

The position demands punctuality, adherence to safety and confidentiality policies, and the ability to work under supervision while performing tasks ranging from mowing to basic electrical and plumbing support.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED preferred.
• Must have some housekeeping experience.
• Must have a valid Michigan Driver's License and be insurable by GTB insurance carrier.

Responsibilities

• Be punctual when reporting for duty as scheduled by your supervisor.
• Follow all rules, regulations, and policies of the Grand Traverse Band.
• Adhere to confidentiality of the department especially involving housing tenants.
• Perform grounds care tasks: mowing, trimming, edging, watering; sweeping walks, snow removal, and de-icing as needed.
• Operate and maintain powered grounds-care equipment (tractors, mowers, trimmers, blowers, spreaders, chain saws).
• Assist Maintenance I or II with general labor in gas, sewer and water line work, or plumbing fixtures.
• Sweep, mop and wax floors, clean and paint walls and woodwork; clean housing units and appliances.
• Perform housekeeping duties including dusting, mopping, vacuuming, and trash removal for offices, bathrooms and break rooms.
• Change light bulbs inside and outside as needed.
• Check smoke detectors and fire extinguishers routinely.
• Under supervision, perform basic electrical tasks (outlets, switches, ballasts) and basic plumbing (toilet repair/replacement, running water/sewer lines).
• Basic mechanical maintenance of residential systems and small engines (greasing, changing filters, spark plugs).
• Take on daily projects with timelines; prioritize based on supervisor direction and equipment availability.
• Handle power tools safely and move furniture and supplies as required.
• Maintain supplies and organize the supply area.
• Other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
