Job summary

The City of Syracuse is seeking a Code Enforcement Inspector to inspect residential dwellings for housing code compliance. You will inspect single and multi-family properties, document violations, and assist in court proceedings.

Responsibilities include notifying owners and tenants, following up on corrective actions, and coordinating with other agencies as needed. A background in housing codes and the ability to communicate clearly are essential.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of housing codes, ordinances, and related laws.
• Ability to inspect residential structures for habitability.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Responsibilities

• Performs inspections of interior and exterior of residential dwellings for structural soundness, hygienic conditions, potential hazards, and code violations.
• Investigates complaints of violations of the Syracuse Property Conservation Code.
• Investigates complaints of violations of the Property Maintenance Code of New York State.
• Prepares inspection reports and documents violations, possibly with photography.
• Notifies tenants/owners of violations and required remedial actions; follows up on corrections.
