Job summary

The Wheeling Housing Authority in Wheeling, WV is seeking a dedicated Housing Assistant to help residents access safe, affordable housing and navigate the application, recertification, and housing processes.

You will maintain resident files, respond to inquiries, collect rent, and support waitlist management while upholding HUD regulations and respectful, confidential service to the community.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's or bachelor's degree in social services, public administration, or related field preferred.
• Prior experience in housing, property management, social services, or public administration a plus.
• Familiarity with HUD programs, Section 8, or public housing regulations is beneficial.
• Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy in recordkeeping.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a customer-service mindset.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn housing management software.
• Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality and professionalism.
• Ability to effectively communicate with a variety of individuals.

Responsibilities

• Assist with processing applications, preparing required correspondence and data input.
• Maintain resident files, records, and housing databases.
• Respond to resident inquiries, concerns, and service requests in a timely and professional manner.
• Collect and accurately record rent.
• Gather information for resident reviews (recertification, inspections, etc.).
• Ensure compliance with HUD regulations, local housing policies, and fair housing laws.
• Support waitlist management and unit assignment processes.
• Answer inquiries via phone and in person, perform basic receptionist duties.
• Fill in for housing manager if needed.
