Job description

Career Opportunity:

The City of Las Vegas Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs department invites applications for Lifeguard.

This is an hourly, part-time position with scheduled hours limited to 19 hours or less per week. The shift varies based on program and facility needs. Hourly employees are limited to 1,560 hours in any 18-month period.

Supervision Received

Receives general supervision from higher-level supervisory or management staff.

Interview Process

Candidates will complete a 10-minute swim followed by a hiring interview. Please bring appropriate swim attire.

Physical Testing Details

Candidates must pass a swim test demonstrating:

  • Swim 150 yards using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination (no back or side swimming), with the first 100 yards timed under 1:45.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes with legs only, optionally with a 10 lb. brick.
  • Swim 50 yards using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination.

Note: The standard for the 100-yard swim is under 1:45. If not met, a re-swim may be required. The tread must be performed with a 10 lb. brick held out of the water for 1 minute. Each test attempt is single; candidates may retry until passing.

Skill Drill
  • Swim 20 yards from water surface, dive to 13 feet to retrieve a dummy or brick, then swim back 20 yards on the back, and exit without a ladder. Time limit: 1 min 40 sec. Only one attempt allowed.

All physical tests are pass/fail. Candidates can reschedule retries until they pass each component.

Selection Process

The process includes application review, interviews for the most qualified, and possibly a hiring interview. Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug test and background check. Some positions require additional background checks.

Applicants will be contacted only if progressing to the interview stage; active applications remain for 4 months.

  • American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification (desired at application, required before hire)
  • Reliable transportation
  • Ability to pass physical swim test
