Job summary

WVUH West Virginia University Hospitals in Morgantown, WV is seeking a phlebotomy technician to perform blood collection for inpatients and outpatients. The role requires adherence to laboratory guidelines and SOPs, operating equipment, and maintaining supply levels to support patient care.

The position will work a 40-hour week with daytime shifts, including rotating Saturdays. Prior phlebotomy experience in hospital/clinic settings is preferred and ongoing education is encouraged.

Qualifications

• Phlebotomy education or allied health education program that includes phlebotomy and at least 50 unaided venipunctures.
• Qualification to perform phlebotomy per AMT/NCA/ASCP or NAACLS accredited program or equivalent with 100 unaided blood collections.

Responsibilities

• Performs blood collection using guidelines to meet patient needs as requested by the ordering provider.
• Follows SOPs to perform basic diagnostic procedures and produce accurate results.
• Operates basic lab equipment (centrifuges, computer system, tube transport, timers).
• Restocks supplies to support co-workers.
• Communicates patient care requirements for all age groups as required by SOPs.
• Efficiently manages time and resources to optimize patient care and efficiency.
• Collects patient specimens promptly to minimize wastage and delays.
• Completes workload within established time frames and monitors turnaround times.
• Maintains effective communication with lab sections, admin offices, coworkers, patients and other departments.
• Answers phone promptly and courteously.
• Participates in staff meetings, trainings, health screens, etc., and stays updated with information.
• Communicates unusual supply usage to supervisor to expedite ordering.
• Refers technical problems to supervisor or nursing staff.
• Contacts nursing staff/provider for unclear test requisitions and requests new orders as needed.
• Notifies units of uncollected specimens to expedite results.
• Informs patients about procedures before, during and after.
• Performs basic clerical duties to support lab operations.
• Ensures correct labeling of specimens and requisitions during computer entry.
• Assists staff in obtaining lab results and directing to appropriate area.
• Requests resubmission for mislabeled specimens or incomplete requisitions.
