Job summary

The Miriam Hospital, part of Brown University Health, is seeking a Financial Counselor to serve as a liaison between patients and the hospital to resolve financial issues for outpatient and inpatient admissions.

Under the supervision of the Manager of Patient Registration, you will verify demographics, confirm insurance coverage, obtain authorizations, determine patient responsibility, and arrange payments prior to services, while maintaining accuracy in documentation.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and insurance concepts.
• Strong verbal and written communication abilities.

Responsibilities

• Pre-admits/registers scheduled outpatients and inpatients in hospital system.
• Contacts insured patients to verify demographics and complete missing information.
• Verifies patient insurance coverage (primary and secondary) online or by phone.
• Obtains and verifies coverage authorizations for scheduled and unscheduled patients.
• Determines patient responsibility and arranges payment prior to services.
• Upon arrival or admission, completes missing documentation required from patients.
• Monitors and follows collection policy for outstanding balances.
• Updates status of financial clearance activities in the hospital system.
• Attends staff meetings and provides coverage as needed.
