Job summary

Howard University Hospital is seeking an HVAC/R Technician I to inspect, repair and maintain hospital HVAC, refrigeration, steam and related equipment. This role supports patient care by keeping systems running safely around the clock under supervision in Facilities Engineering.

The candidate should have a high school diploma or GED, a completed Journeyman program, five years of HVAC/R experience and a Universal Refrigeration License.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Completion of a Journeyman program.
• Five years of HVAC/R experience.
• Universal Refrigeration License (non-automotive).
• Working knowledge of heating and cooling air handling systems.
• Knowledge of fluid systems and brazing techniques.
• Adherence to safety regulations.
• Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
• Problem-solving and adaptability.
• Time management with multiple tasks.
• Strong customer service and professional conduct with patients and staff.
• Ability to stand/walk and lift up to 35 lbs., occasional heavier with equipment.

Responsibilities

• Maintain, repair and troubleshoot HVAC/R equipment including chillers, air handling systems, heat exchangers and cooling towers.
• Measure and fabricate pipe to specs from work requests.
• Study drawings and manuals to diagnose equipment issues.
• Maintain valves and fittings in steam and hot water systems.
• Repair steam regulating systems and auxiliary equipment.
• Repair shell and tube heat exchangers.
• Perform urgent and routine repairs on HVAC systems.
• Maintain compliance records per regulations and Joint Commission.
• Prepare stock and project material lists.
• Document preventive maintenance accurately.
• Support ethics and HIPAA requirements.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
