Job summary

Howard University Hospital is seeking an HVAC/R Technician I to maintain medical HVAC, refrigeration, steam and related equipment, including centrifugal chillers and air handling systems. The role operates under supervision within Engineering to ensure patient care systems run safely and in compliance with standards.

Responsibilities include installation, repair, and maintenance of HVAC/R equipment, piping, and controls, with a focus on safety and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Completion of a Journeyman program.
• Five years of experience with HVAC/R systems.
• Universal Refrigeration License (non‑automotive).
• Working knowledge of heating and cooling air handling systems.
• Working knowledge of fluid systems and brazing techniques.
• Adherence to safety regulations.
• Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
• Problem-solving and time management skills.

Responsibilities

• Maintain, install and repair HVAC/R equipment including steam turbines, chillers, heat exchangers, air handling systems, and piping.
• Measure, cut, thread and bend pipe to work request specs.
• Study drawings and manuals to diagnose equipment issues.
• Maintain and replace valves in steam, hot water, heating and cooling systems.
• Repair steam regulating systems and auxiliary equipment.
• Repair shell and tube heat exchangers.
• Perform urgent and routine repairs on refrigeration and AC systems.
• Maintain compliance records for regulatory standards.
• Prepare and record preventive maintenance documentation.
