Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC is seeking an Environmental Services Specialist for the Evening shift. You will perform routine cleaning across patient rooms, clinics, and public spaces, delivering infection-control-aware housekeeping to support safe, patient-centered care.

This role requires physical activity, lifting up to 35 lbs, operating a range of cleaning equipment, and strict adherence to PPE and HIPAA guidelines.

Qualifications

• Requires High School Diploma or GED.
• At least 1 year of environmental services or janitorial experience.
• Knowledge of universal precautions, blood-borne pathogens, and PPE usage.
• Ability to safely operate high-powered cleaning equipment.
• Ability to follow written and oral instructions with sound judgment.
• Strong customer service orientation with patients, families, visitors, and staff.
• Effective time management, problem-solving, and adaptability.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine cleaning of patient rooms, nursing units, offices, clinical areas, and public spaces.
• Operate cleaning equipment (buffers, scrubbers, vacuums, extractors, etc.) and maintain gear.
• Empty trash, replace liners, and manage waste disposal.
• Replenish expendables (soap, toilet tissue, towels).
• Follow universal precautions and PPE protocols in patient areas.
• Report repairs and safety hazards to supervisor.
• Maintain patient and family confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
• Attend mandatory compliance training and participate in improvements.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
