Job summary

Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in Williamsburg, VA seeks a Stable Groom to care for horses, carriages, and facilities for the carriage operation. You will work with the Lead Groom, Barn Manager, and Coach Drivers to maintain an historically accurate equine program and safe tours.

Responsibilities include feeding, grooming, harnessing, health monitoring, and assisting with veterinary visits, stable maintenance, and guest questions while supporting a high standard of interpretive programming.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED (or equivalent experience in horse care).
• Hands-on experience working with horses, such as in a stable, farm, or equestrian facility.
• Preferred: Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Equine Science, Animal Science, Agricultural Studies, or a related field. Certifications in Equine Care & Handling (CHA, Equine First Aid) are a plus.
• Previous experience in carriage driving operations, historic sites, or tourism-focused equine programs.

Responsibilities

• Provide daily feeding, watering, and turnout for a herd of 25 horses.
• Groom, tack, and harness horses in preparation for carriage operations.
• Monitor equine health, report concerns to the Barn Manager, and assist with veterinary and farrier visits.
• Administer basic first aid and medication as directed.
• Muck stalls, clean paddocks, and maintain cleanliness of the barn, tack room, and storage areas.
• Assist with routine carriage cleaning and maintenance and support guest interaction.
