Job summary

Colonial Williamsburg Foundation seeks a Stable Groom to care for a 25-horse herd and support the carriage operations within the historic area. You will groom, tack, harness, feed, and monitor horse health, while upholding safety and historical accuracy in a world‑class museum setting.

The role involves daily outdoor work, interaction with guests, and collaboration with the Barn Manager, Lead Groom, and drivers. Virginia driver’s license and clean MVR are required.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED (or equivalent experience in horse care).
• Hands-on experience working with horses in a stable, farm, or equestrian facility.
• Basic knowledge of horse handling, feeding, and health care.
• Preferred: Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Equine Science, Animal Science, Agricultural Studies, or related field.
• Certifications in Equine Care & Handling (CHA, Equine First Aid).
• Previous experience in carriage driving operations, historic sites, or tourism-focused programs.

Responsibilities

• Provide daily feeding, watering, and turnout for a herd of 25 horses.
• Groom, tack, and harness horses for carriage operations.
• Monitor equine health and report concerns; assist veterinary and farrier visits.
• Administer basic first aid and medications as directed.
• Muck stalls and maintain barn cleanliness; clean tack and equipment.
• Assist with routine carriage cleaning and maintenance.
• Support training; handle and exercise horses; engage with guests about horses and carriages.
