Job summary

Memorial Health System in Springfield, IL is seeking a Histology Technician to support daily preparation of routine and specialized histology procedures, including gross examination, fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy and staining.

On-the-job training is provided, with potential ASCP certification after one year and compliance with CLIA, CAP and safety standards. Candidates should have a degree as specified and basic laboratory skills to ensure high-quality results.

Qualifications

• Education must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that include six semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation by a pathologist.
• Utilize LIS system and other computer systems to perform duties.
• Sort and assign cases to pathologists.
• Operate, clean and maintain histology equipment and troubleshoot minor equipment failures; document remedial actions.
• Prepare solutions and reagents for manual and automated stain processes.
• File blocks and slides according to department procedures.
• Adhere to quality control policies and document all quality control activities.
• Ensure compliance with local, federal, CLIA and CAP regulations.
• May participate in on-call and weekend rotation as deemed by the Histology Supervisor.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area.
