Job summary

City of New York is seeking an Associate Inspector (Highways - 31645) to supervise and train inspection staff, review reports, and manage workloads across boroughs. The role requires extensive highway/sewer construction experience with supervisory responsibilities and involvement in enforcement and documentation.

Responsibilities include conducting inspections, coordinating with contractors and agencies, preparing reports, and participating in hiring, training, and policy development.

Qualifications

• Six years of full-time paid experience in road and sewer construction/repair, with at least one year in a supervisory role.
• Four years in related work with two years in supervisory capacity plus two years of relevant college/technical study.
• One year supervisory experience plus completion of an approved five-year highway/sewer inspection apprenticeship program.
• Three years of highway/sewer inspection with supervisory experience or related education.
• Equivalency of education/experience to the above may be accepted.

Responsibilities

• Supervise, train, and evaluate inspection staff in field and office operations.
• Review, audit, and ensure quality control of inspection reports, enforcement actions, and compliance docs.
• Distribute and monitor inspection workload within the unit.
• Conduct special and protest inspections and complex investigations.
• Represent the unit in meetings; liaise with contractors, city agencies, and the public.
• Prepare reports; manage office tasks and supervise staff in the absence of coordinators.
