Job summary

The State of South Carolina's Department of Transportation is hiring a Heavy Equipment Operator to support the construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges within Dorchester County. You will operate backhoes, excavators, loaders, and other machinery, performing skilled manual work to maintain the State highway system.

Responsibilities include coordinating traffic control for work zones, patching potholes, and assisting in emergency or inclement weather operations.

Responsibilities

• Operates and maintains heavy motorized equipment (e.g.; backhoe, excavator, front-end loader) for roads and bridges.
• Performs skilled manual labor for construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges.
• Coordinates placement of traffic control devices to set up maintenance work zones per SCDOT manual.
• Patches potholes and base surface failures using electric/gas powered tools and hand tools.
• Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, possibly 12-hour shifts.
• Assists in other related duties as assigned.
