Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a heavy equipment operator/maintenance worker to perform maintenance on roads and bridges across the state highway system. You will operate motorized equipment, support drainage and vegetation projects, and assist with traffic control and safety procedures.

A valid driver’s license is required, and a Class A CDL must be obtained within six months of placement.

Qualifications

• One year of related work experience.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Maintenance activities in construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system.
• Operate motorized equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways and bridges and movement of materials.
• Operate heavy equipment (e.g., motor grader, backhoe, dozer, excavators) for highway maintenance and construction tasks.
• Support drainage, vegetation management, and roadside/right-of-way clearing operations alongside brush and limb management.
• Install, repair, and maintain signs, form-setting, and concrete work for curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and related facilities.
