Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking an equipment operator to maintain highway right-of-ways and perform complex ditch and drainage work. You will operate a slope mower, tandem dump truck, loader/backhoe, and a range of hand and power tools, conducting pre-operation inspections and routine maintenance.

Applicants must have at least one year of related experience or an approved equivalence, and must obtain a Class A CDL within six months.

Qualifications

• One (1) year of related work experience or an approved equivalent.
• Requires a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
• Must obtain Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of placement.
• Physical requirements include bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling and lifting up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to work outside normal hours and respond to emergencies or incidents as needed in all weather conditions.

Responsibilities

• Operates slope mower withBuzz Bar and other heavy equipment to maintain highway right-of-ways and perform limbing, sloping, ditch cleaning, and drainage work.
• Picks up and hauls materials such as concrete pipes, asphalt, dirt, limestone, debris; operates trailers and other support equipment.
• Sets up traffic control per SCMUTCD standards and supports emergency operations after hours as required.
