Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks a seasoned equipment operator to maintain highways, shoulders, and ditches using backhoes, slope mowers, and tractors. You will coordinate traffic control and perform vegetation management on structures and medians, while complying with safety and field guide requirements.

Required is one year of related work experience or equivalent, and a valid driver’s license with CDL planned to be obtained within six months.

Qualifications

• One year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• Requires a valid motor vehicle operator’s license; CDL expected within six months.

Responsibilities

• Operate backhoe and slope mowers to maintain highway shoulders and ditch banks.
• Coordinate placement of traffic control devices for work zones.
• Perform vegetation management on bridges, overpasses, and structures.
• Operate and maintain hand tools and powered tools (chain saws, cutters, drills).
• Assist in emergency and inclement weather operations.
• May work extended hours or 12-hour shifts and respond to emergencies.
