South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator for the Light Vegetation Crew. The role involves operating backhoes, excavators, loaders, and other heavy gear to maintain rights-of-way, drainage, and signs while following strict safety practices.

Applicants must have at least 1 year of related experience or equivalence, and hold a valid license with CDL Class A within six months of placement. Some shifts may be extended or 12-hour durations.

Qualifications

• One (1) year of related work experience or equivalent.
• Requires a valid driver's license with CDL Class A within six months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Operates heavy equipment on the Light Vegetation Crew such as backhoe, excavator, loader, lowboy, motor grader, slope mower, and tractor with ditcher.
• Assists in maintenance work including residential driveway installation, repair, relocation and regular maintenance, drainage structures, and signs.
• Instructs crew in safety practices such as flagging operations and PPE usage.
• Assists in traffic control setup for work zones including lane closures and detours.
• Supports on-call operations for after hours emergencies, snow/ice and hurricane response.
• May work extended hours or 12-hour shifts.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
