Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a heavy equipment operator to maintain roads and perform tasks with loaders, backhoes, excavators, and dump trucks. The role involves ditch cleaning, patching potholes, curb and sidewalk work, and transporting materials such as concrete pipes and asphalt.

Candidates must have at least one year of related experience, a valid driver's license, and must obtain a Class A CDL within six months.

Qualifications

One year of related work experience.
Requires valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
Must obtain Class A CDL within six months of placement.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
May work overtime and outdoors in all weather.

Responsibilities

Operates and maintains heavy equipment such as front-end loader, backhoe, excavator, motor grader, etc.
Perform duties including manual labor or operating equipment for road maintenance: ditch cleaning, patching potholes, curb and sidewalk work.
Hauls materials with 5- and 10-yard dump trucks (concrete pipes, asphalt, dirt, limestone, etc.).
Maintain and use electric/gas tools; follow safety practices and flagging operations.
Assist in setting up work zone traffic control and flag traffic to protect workers and public.
Support emergencies and inclement weather operations; may work outside normal hours.
