Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a skilled highway maintenance worker to perform heavy equipment operations and vegetation management across roadways and rights-of-way. You will mow, trim, and clear debris, ensuring safe traffic flow and road conditions.

Position requires one year of related work experience or an approved equivalence, plus a valid driver’s license; CDL Class A must be obtained within six months of placement.

Qualifications

• One year of related work experience or an approved equivalence.
• Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license; CDL Class A within six months.

Responsibilities

• Performs skilled highway maintenance worker functions and operates heavy equipment such as slope mowers and backhoes.
• Mows roadside and right-of-way, manages brush, and handles bridge vegetation tasks.
• Operates large tractors with batwing mowers; performs routine mowing and vegetation management.
• Coordinates placement of traffic control devices to set up work zones per SC DOT manual.
• Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations, including extended hours or 12‑hour shifts.
• Operates anti-icing and snow removal equipment in winter weather.
