Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking an Inspector to oversee highway construction and maintenance projects. You will supervise quality, ensure compliance with plans, and manage documentation including diaries, photos, and as-built drawings.

You will coordinate with project staff, review materials testing, and assist in communicating traffic changes and project milestones to the public and stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with VDOT and contractor personnel and the general public.
• Ability to maintain detailed records, prepare reports and maintain project files.
• Ability to read, interpret and analyze roadway, structure and bridge plans, specifications and contract documents.
• Knowledge of construction, civil engineering, project management or materials inspection.
• Knowledge of mathematics to include algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
• Possession of or ability to obtain required certifications within 12 months of employment and maintain thereafter.

Responsibilities

• Communicate with VDOT support staff and external support staff and assist in public relations for projects.
• Ensure construction activities comply with contract, plans and environmental controls; assist with non-compliance notifications and resolution.
• Maintain materials documentation, diaries, and correlate with contractor activities; keep as-built drawings and project files.
• Monitor work zones, safety practices, and environmental compliance; ensure proper reporting and inspections.
• Oversee QC tasks and assist in scheduling and providing support equipment as needed.
• May train and oversee other inspectors and trainees on complex contracts.
