Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) in Staunton, VA is seeking an inspector to independently coordinate, schedule and inspect phases of highway construction. You will ensure quality per plans, manage public relations, and coordinate lane closures with operations staff.

Qualifications

• Able to communicate effectively orally and in writing with VDOT, contractors, and the public.
• Able to read, interpret and analyze roadway, structure and bridge plans, contracts and project documents.
• Record and maintain detailed project documentation and prepare reports and correspondence.
• Able to work in a team environment and provide guidance to other inspectors.
• Able to work independently and oversee/train other inspectors.
• Knowledge of construction methods, materials, equipment, standards, and terminology.
• Certification readiness within 12 months and ability to obtain required certifications.
• Valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate, schedule and inspect highway construction projects to ensure quality per plans and specs.
• Monitor contracts, safety, environmental controls, and compliance with regulations.
• Review submittals, prepare diaries and notes, and track project progress and budget.
• Maintain as-built drawings and project files; distribute meeting minutes.
• Oversee contractor performance and ensure items are paid as work is completed.
• Manage traffic control, landowner/public concerns, and safety in work zones.
