Job summary

Commonwealth of VA Careers is seeking an inspector to oversee highway construction projects, ensuring compliance with plans, specifications, environmental controls and safety standards. Responsibilities include tracking materials, keeping detailed diaries and drawings, and supporting project teams to maintain schedules and quality across phases of work.

Qualifications

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with VDOT, contractor personnel and the public.
• Ability to maintain detailed records, prepare reports and project files.
• Ability to read and interpret roadway, structure and bridge plans, specs and contract documents.
• Knowledge of construction, civil engineering, project management or materials inspection.
• Knowledge of mathematics including algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
• Possession of or ability to obtain required certifications within 12 months of employment.

Responsibilities

• Inspect highway construction and maintenance work to ensure compliance with plans, specs, environmental and safety requirements.
• Oversee materials testing and ensure proper documentation before payment.
• Maintain project files, diaries, as-built drawings and quarterly performance reports for primes and subcontractors.
• Coordinate lane closures, traffic changes, public communications and reviewer oversight with project teams.
• Support project inspectors and managers in monitoring schedule, resources and safety on site.
