Job summary

Mortenson Construction is seeking a Substation Technician to construct, maintain, test, troubleshoot, and repair high-voltage substation equipment for safe, reliable power delivery. Responsibilities include inspection, installation of cables, grounding, switching, and energization, with emphasis on safety and documentation.

The role requires reading electrical schematics and drawings, a high school diploma or GED plus relevant electrical experience or apprenticeship, and a valid driver's license

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Two years of electrical, utility, substation, power delivery, or related experience; apprenticeship completion preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and construction drawings.
• Valid driver's license; Class A CDL preferred or ability to obtain.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., work at heights, work in confined spaces, and perform physically demanding work in varying weather conditions.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine inspection, maintenance, testing, and repair of transformers, circuit breakers, relays, capacitor banks, regulators, and associated substation equipment.
• Install, terminate, and troubleshoot power, control, and communication cables.
• Construct and install grounding systems, steel structures, conduit, and other substation infrastructure.
• Read and interpret electrical schematics, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and construction drawings.
• Execute approved switching procedures and assist with energization, commissioning, and startup activities.
• Troubleshoot electrical and control system issues to identify and correct equipment failures.
• Maintain accurate maintenance, testing, and inspection records.
• Follow all OSHA, company, client, and project safety requirements while utilizing required PPE.
• Respond to emergency outages and support restoration efforts as needed.
