Job summary

Claiborne County Schools is seeking a Special Education Teaching Assistant to support 9th–12th grade students with special needs. The role provides instructional, behavioral, and personal assistance under a licensed Special Education Teacher.

Responsibilities include classroom support, IEP accommodation implementation, data collection, and collaboration with staff to promote inclusion and safety in the school environment.

Qualifications

• Must meet one of Tennessee's criteria: high school diploma + ParaPro, 48 college credit hours, or an associate's degree.
• Strong math skills and basic computer literacy.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently.
• Excellent verbal and written communication for reporting.

Responsibilities

• Reinforce learning concepts presented by the teacher to help students master high school curriculum standards.
• Adapt or modify classroom work, materials, and testing per IEP guidelines.
• Assist 9–12th grade students with post-secondary transition goals, including vocational training or independent living skills.
• Monitor student behavior and safety across classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, and field trips.
• Implement and track Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) using positive reinforcement.
• Respond to emotional or behavioral crises using district-approved safety techniques.
• Assist students with activities of daily living (ADLs) and basic medical support under health staff guidance.
• Prepare instructional materials and copy displays or assistive technology tools.
• Maintain confidentiality of student records per FERPA guidelines.
• Collect precise daily data on academic progress and behavior.
• Collaborate with teachers to support inclusion and classroom routines.
