Job summary

Heritage Research Group offers an undergraduate internship to assist the Analytical Research Group with flash chromatography of asphalt and comparison with SARA. The project aims to develop a mathematical model to predict SARA fraction analysis by Flash Chromatography and to understand aging effects on asphalt fractions, informing rejuvenation and coating products to protect pavement.

Responsibilities include guiding research direction, lab work, documentation, and collaborating with supervisors

Qualifications

  • High School or Equivalent.
  • Preferred Bachelor's Degree: Current Sophomore or Junior studying chemistry or material science.
  • Two semesters of General Chemistry and associated laboratory.
  • Two semesters of Organic Chemistry and associated laboratory.
  • Two semesters of Quantitative Analysis and Instrumental Analysis and associated laboratories.

  • Have mechanical ability and fine motor skills.
  • Able to do multiple tasks, and work on parallel projects.
  • Maintain a well-organized workspace.

Role Overview

HRG is seeking an undergraduate intern that will assist the Analytical Research Group.


This internship will be focused on Flash Chromatography of asphalt and comparison analysis with SARA.


The ultimate goal of the project is to develop a mathematical model to predict traditional SARA fraction analysis by Flash Chromatograph. When this project is completed, we will be able to tell which fractions of asphalt are impacted by aging (primarily by oxidation and UV damage). This will provide insight into rejuvenation products and also to coating products to protect asphalt pavement from aging.

  • Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned, including but not limited to continuously growing in alignment with the Company's core values, competencies, and skills.


Education Qualifications


  • High School or Equivalent

  • Preferred Bachelor's Degree: Current Sophomore or Junior studying chemistry or material science.


Experience Qualifications


  • two semesters of General Chemistry and associated laboratory.

  • Required two semesters of Organic Chemistry and associated laboratory.

  • Required two semesters of Quantitative Analysis and Instrumental Analysis and associated laboratories.


Skills and Abilities


  • Students completing their second or third year in chemistry/material science.

  • Previous experience working in a laboratory environment (including academic lab courses).

  • Understanding and implementation of safe laboratory practices.

  • Candidates must be comfortable working in a laboratory.

  • Basic computer proficiency is required including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

  • Desire to innovate and achieve excellence in research.

  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a larger team.

  • Ability to communicate clearly with peers, supervisors, and external collaborators.


Working Conditions / Physical Demands


  • This is a laboratory role and proper Personal Protective Equipment must be worn at all times within the laboratory.

  • This role requires standing for 2 to 3 hours a day.

  • This role requires the ability to lift up to 20 lbs overhead.

  • The laboratory and associated offices are all air conditioned and maintained at 72 degrees F.
