Job summary

Heritage Research Group is seeking a laboratory intern to support asphalt mixtures and binder research. The role involves sampling aggregates, preparing mixes, recording data, and executing standard QC procedures in a lab and occasionally in the field.

Ideal candidates are high school graduates or current undergraduates pursuing related engineering or materials science fields with 1+ year lab exposure and strong teamwork and communication skills.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Preferred rising college student (freshman–senior) majoring in civil engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering, construction management, material sciences, mechanical engineering, or related fields.
  • 1+ years laboratory experience preferred.
  • Ability to work in a team and communicate findings clearly.

Responsibilities

  • Assist pavement, binder, and mixture research and design initiatives.
  • Sample aggregates and asphalt mixtures.
  • Perform aggregate testing (gradation, gravities, etc.).
  • Prepare mixes and batch samples for tests.
  • Record data accurately and support reporting.
  • Follow safety protocols and maintain lab cleanliness.
  • Analyze data and help with experimental designs.
  • Support field sampling at on-site locations.

The laboratory intern will be responsible for assisting research and mixture designs related to asphalt mixtures and binders at the Heritage Research Group. Occasional field work required.

Essential Functions
  • Assisting in the pavement, binder, and mixture related research and design initiatives within HRG.
  • Aggregate and asphalt mixture sampling.
  • Aggregate testing including fractionation, gradation, gravities, and other physical characteristics.
  • Mix preparation including batching.
  • Basic data analysis and support, with associated reporting.
  • Conducting bituminous specimen fabrication.
  • Following all safety protocols and fostering a safety-focused culture
  • Executing industry-standard testing and quality control procedures
  • Accurately recording and organizing information
  • Understanding and applying data-driven experimental designs
  • Communicating effectively with team members and across operating companies
  • Collecting and analyzing samples from various locations
  • Evaluating test results and implementing corrective actions as needed
  • Identifying opportunities for improvement in safety, quality, and efficiency
  • Assisting in the maintenance and calibration of laboratory and field equipment
  • Maintaining good laboratory housekeeping practices
  • Working effectively in a team environment

Education Qualifications Required
  • High School or Equivalent
  • Preferred Bachelor's Degree : Current freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in civil engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering, construction management, material sciences, mechanical engineering, and other related fields.
Experience Qualifications Preferred
  • 1+ years Laboratory experience.
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to complete basic data analysis.
  • Basic math and excel skills.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work within a team.
  • Interested in working with your hands and working at on-site locations.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands
  • Work is primarily performed in a lab setting, with occasional tasks in the field.
  • Must adhere to all safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as lab coats, gloves, and safety goggles.
  • Mobility: Frequent standing, walking, and moving around the lab.
  • Occasional bending, stooping, and reaching.
  • Manual Dexterity: Proficiency in handling small tools and laboratory equipment.
  • Communication: Clear verbal and written communication skills for reporting findings and collaborating with team members.
  • Able to work in a dusty environment, sometimes including the need for PPE (provided).
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds on occasion.
  • Willing to get hands dirty working with asphalt materials
