Job summary

Valdosta Police Department seeks a maintenance worker to operate heavy equipment for streets, stormwater, and trees. You will drive and operate backhoes, excavators, loaders, and bulldozers, and perform vehicle inspections.

Responsibilities include tree trimming, debris removal, traffic control, and installing holiday decorations. Requires high school diploma, Georgia driver’s license, and 1–2 years related experience.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of street, tree, and stormwater maintenance techniques, equipment and supplies.
• Knowledge of safety policies and procedures.

This position operates heavy equipment in the repair and maintenance of city streets, stormwater infrastructure, and trees.

• Operates backhoe, excavator, front-end loader, bulldozer and other equipment used in the maintenance of streets and the stormwater system.


• Operates vehicles and equipment to transport equipment, tool and supplies to and from work sites.


• Trims and prunes city trees; removes tree limbs and debris from streets and city property; installs trees and landscaping.


• Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment; performs pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections.


• Assists in traffic control at work sites.


• Installs and removes holiday decorations.


• Performs related duties.

Requirements

• Knowledge of the techniques, equipment, and supplies used in street, tree, and stormwater system maintenance.


• Knowledge of city and departmental safety policies and procedures.


• Knowledge of the geography of the city, including street names and locations.


• Skill in the operation of assigned vehicles, trucks and heavy equipment.


• Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.


• Skill in the use of hand and power tools.


• Skill in oral and written communication.


• Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.


• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.


• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
